Some lessons that he learned from his parents were to not steal and to work hard. As I was talking to Dad about his life, working hard seemed to be a theme in this family. Something that they all took pride in.
Discipline in the Holmes’ house was pretty strict. Carl can remember his dad beating him repeatedly with a willow tree stick until he had welts on his body. He also told of a specific time when his dad didn’t think he was hoeing fast enough and he took the bridle off the horse and started to whip him. I asked him if his parents showed affection. He said his mother would hug him but his father didn’t. He can’t ever remembering either one of them saying they loved him. That makes me so sad.
